NorthsideHigh SchoolGifted and TalentedProgram

2010-2011

In order to support and fulfill the quest for knowledge and as part of the Northside High School Gifted and Talented Program, GT students in grades nine through twelve shall enroll in and complete at least one of the four core Honors level classes and meet the district requirements of the class(es).

After completion of program requirements, a possible weighted grade of ten points shall be added to participants' semester grade.

At a teacher's discretion, some or all Honors/GT Program work may be assigned in lieu of class work.

  • In lieu of Honors classes, a GT student in grade 11 or 12 may choose to enroll and take a course by concurrent enrollment with Vernon College.  Northside School can absorb the cost of one semester per year of concurrent enrollment with the stipulation that a 3.00 or "B" average be maintained.

Honors Program requirements:

Honors English requires students to produce a 2500-word research paper based on a teacher-approved topic and completion of four novels chosen from a pre-approved author list and 1000+ word essays based on each novel.  The novel assignments are divided equally between semesters.   Additionally, students must fulfill assigned work in regular classes.  Honors English may be completed in conjunction with other core subjects.

Honors Social Studies, Science, and Math may be completed along with Honors English requirements in relation to research and reading assignments.

Honors Social Studies requires a research paper of at least 2500 words completed by the end of the year and one (1) book and a 1000+ word essay per semester.  The research paper topic and books must be teacher-approved.  These requirements are in addition to regular classroom work.

Honors Science and Honors Math may be coordinated and require a 2500+ word research paper based on a teacher-approved topic during the first semester.   A book study and 1000+ word essay as well as a Science Fair project shall be required during the second semester.  The year's work may be based on one topic.

Course credit for Honors classes is awarded based upon the following:

  • FIRST SEMESTER work must be completed and turned in to the assigning teacher by final bell on Tuesday, December 14, 2010.
  • SECOND SEMESTER work must be completed and turned in to the assigning teacher by final bell on Thursday, May 26, 2011.

A Gifted and Talented student may be FURLOUGHED and /or EXITED from the program (Gifted and Talented Policy and Procedures, 18) in case of student failure to complete a semester and/or year's course requirements.
